Choosing a Greenhouse
There are several things to consider when trying to decide which greenhouse to buy.
Start by asking yourself the following questions:
What is my budget?
A very important question! Decide this early on, and find out what you can get within that amount. You’ll live with this greenhouse for many years, so it’s better to wait until you can afford what you really want than to settle for a smaller house or for lesser quality.
What do I want the greenhouse for?
Greenhouses have many uses, and are not for just growing plants. Possibilities include propagating and growing on seedlings, growing vegetables year round, overwintering tender plants, or growing orchids. A greenhouse can make a great sunroom. We’ve even seen one used to house chickens.
What size do I need?
This depends on your answer to question two. Generally, all sources recommend getting one size bigger than what you think you’ll need – budget and space permitting. Owning a greenhouse is like owning a boat— the desire for “just two more feet” can set in very quickly!
What kind of greenhouse will best suit the needs of my family?
A free standing greenhouse is ideal if it is to be used exclusively for growing plants in. If your garden space is limited a lean-to or wall garden might be all you need. For a family sunroom, the lean-to style is a more likely choice.
What materials work best in our climate?
In our opinion, the best glazing material is glass, as it lets 90% of the light through, and does not degrade in the sunlight. Glass will last forever and broken panes are easy and inexpensive to replace. In harsher climates that experience hailstorms, polycarbonate is recommended as glass won’t hold up. Also, if your greenhouse is to be located in a backyard playground, then polycarbonate may be a safer choice.
Aluminum is the best material for the frame and struts, as it requires no upkeep and doesn’t rust or rot.
